Kendle vs Sony

I have used both an early version of the Sony etext reader and now the Kindle. Although I resisted buying the Kindle, I am glad I did. It simply is better and more convenient that the Sony.

I bought the Sony around 2007 and had a learning curve. Either I didn't like the choices of books at the Sony store or I didn't like the way I had to download books. I had to download books to my computer, attack the correct cable and upload my new text. There was a well designed page for downloading text into my computer. The problem is this page never worked worth a damn. There were too many times I had to use a dos shell to log into the Sony and directly modify the data base of books. This is frowned upon...

Either I didn't find many books to my "I have to buy it taste" for the Sony or I simply did not feel like spending the money. It was easy to read text on the Sony but the unit was large and not much more convenient than a paperback. Still, I stuck with it because I did not intend to replace a working unit - the Sony - with something new - a Kindle.

In mid November 2011, I was walking to a restaurant in the early afternoon. I was struggling with grief at the fact my dog of 13 had suffered a stroke and was simply very ill. My dog was literally the walking dead and I was having a very hard time dealing with this. I put the Sony under my right arm and just had to check if my left suspender had come undone. It had. Instead of ignoring this, I moved my right arm to help my left arm and dropped the Sony.

Rest in pieces, Sony!

We took Chewbacca (our dog) to the vet clinic, said goodbye and left him to the mercy of the vets. Our vet clinic does free euthanasia to prevent folks from blotching the kills and causing a dog or cat completely unnecessary pain.

Rest in peace, Chewie!

I bought the model Kindle that features a keyboard. The instructions were fairly simply and yet I am still learning how to use the machine.  I really like the ease of getting text into the Kindle. I can:

All in all, Kindle is more convenient and Amazon.com has a fine book selection, much better than Sony.  It would be nice if Powell's Books of Portland Oregon provided books in Kindled form. That would give competition for Amazon. It would be nice if I had a conversion programme that would allow me to easily convert from some other format (.txt, Sony, .lib) to the Kindle format.

That would be very nice.
